1973 Yankee Restoration Project

Pictures taken 11/30/2003

Case has been disassembled almost to the
point where the next step would be to split
the crankshafts. All needed bearing numbers
can be seen and ordered at this point.

The Yankee case is huge, there's almost
room for another motor inside. Tranny
assembly comes out in one piece, with
engine still in the bike if needed.

These primary drive gears look almost OK
at the top. Gears have to be thoroughly
cleaned and inspected, they are case
hardened, and any rust or pitting will
compromise the strength of the entire
gear or gears.

Same gear, showing top half, which sat above
the transmission oil for 25 years. This set has
to be replaced. Most other transmission
components look to be in good shape.

Jackshaft locknut has to come off to replace
bearings and switch firing sequence. A normal
26mm socket won't fit in there to loosen the
(left hand threaded) nut.

Best way around this problem is to turn down
the socket on a lathe, so it fits under the
engine case lip, flat on the locknut. This
will allow removal and replacement of the nut.
