1973 Yankee Restoration Project

Pictures taken 11/7/2003

Frame came back from being sand
blasted today, it was primered the
same day, to keep out any moisture.

Sand blasting process left the frame a
shiny, almost metallic silver.

Whole frame was lightly sanded to remove
grit and give a smooth surface for primer.
Right front frame down tube had previous
bondo, slight accident damage that will
have to be repaired before final paint.

Two coats of primer, light sanding, 100% smoother!!

Starting to look more like a Yankee now.

Tank came out good. Final paint and
decals will be next.

Side panels primered OK, bottom panel will have
to be replaced, broken just below the fastener.

These pipes have a big offset to the right
side, and the left pipe is longer than the right
one. There is a Jet Coat process available that
will leave the pipes a shiny silver color, or
they could be chromed. As nice as
they are, it would be a shame to paint
them black again.

Cleanup of the chambers was started. It
doesn't look like these have a place for any
fiberglass packing in them, only silencers with
removable cores, no place for glass at all.

The welds are rough, this is the result of
the basic jig and stick weld process.

Engine turns over now. Engine castings are sort
of rough, they will be cleaned up before being
painted. Clutch plates look messy, may need new.

Right side cylinder is in rough shape. Had three
broken fins when I got it, now the liner skirt
has broken off, maybe due to the tough job
of getting the pistons freed up. Something
else for the parts list.

Starting to look better, lots of cleaning being done,
engine will look better with a new coat of paint.

This was found in the bottom of the engine case.
What is it, and where is the other half?

It looks like a machined, hardened part.
From the tranny maybe?

Here is the Yankee frame next to a YZ250.
Yankee is lower to the ground (less suspension),
well built (heavier), has a compression release
(so you can start it), has dual tapped heads
(plugs foul, carry spares), dual exhausts
(both like to fall off), and other special
features that are what make these 70's
bikes such fun to own.

I'm in touch with several Ossa / Yankee people
on the net for information and parts (thanks guys!)

Here is my current list of needed parts:

> Pistons, base gaskets, head gaskets, headlight
shell, rear disk brake reservoir, caliper rebuild kit.

> Rear brake pads, left side panel, 6 Dzus fasteners,
handlebars, Mikuni 34mm carbs (rebuild IRZ later).

> Repo front and back fenders, decals, new brake
and clutch levers, air cleaner element, battery.

> Right cylinder and liner, new gas tank cap and
2 tank valves, new chain, rear view mirror.

> Glass and bezel for speedometer, clutch
plates and springs, handle grips, steering
head bearings.

Stuff that still has to be done on the restore:

> Have seat recovered, polish front forks, polish
both hubs, both rims. Have bike painted.

> Bore both cylinders .20 over, assemble engine,
electrical, brakes, carbs, exhaust, forks.

> Be prepared to replace crank bearings, get
bike inspected and insured.

I hope the bike is ready in
time for CJ's May trail ride.
